Many businesses also rely on multi-drop courier operators for retail distribution, e-commerce fulfilment and scheduled delivery rounds. Larger consignments may be handled through specialist pallet carriers and pallet networks, which are often more suitable than traditional parcel services for heavier freight.
Other specialist services include international courier deliveries, fragile and high-value goods transport, medical logistics, temperature-controlled deliveries and dedicated time-critical transport.
The best courier for your business depends largely on what you are sending and how quickly it needs to arrive.
One common mistake is assuming every courier company can handle every type of load. A courier specialising in small parcels may not be equipped to transport large, awkward or high-value items. Likewise, a same-day operator may not offer the lowest rates for routine overnight deliveries.
After many years working with transport operators, I would place reliability above almost everything else. A courier that consistently delivers when promised is usually worth more than one offering slightly lower prices.
Look closely at collection performance, delivery success rates, customer communication and proof of delivery procedures. Modern courier operations should provide electronic tracking, delivery updates and clear confirmation once goods have been delivered.
Tracking systems have improved significantly over the years. Customers increasingly expect to know where their shipment is, when it will arrive and who signed for it. Good courier companies invest heavily in these systems because they reduce disputes and improve customer confidence.
It is also worth checking whether the company uses employed drivers, owner-drivers or subcontractors, particularly if consistency of service is important to your business.
Many businesses wrongly assume all goods are fully insured while being transported. That is not always the case.
Before appointing a courier, ask what level of Goods in Transit insurance is included and whether any exclusions apply. High-value items, electronics, jewellery, artwork and specialist equipment may require additional cover.
You should also understand the claims process and the evidence required if goods are lost or damaged. A reputable courier should be able to explain this clearly before any contract begins.

Urgent same-day work will naturally cost more than network-based overnight delivery because a dedicated vehicle is often committed to a single consignment.
